News for Sunday 27th November: First Sunday of Advent

News from St Mary the Virgin, Kenton on Sunday 27th November 2022: The First Sunday of Advent

Dear friends,

Last Sunday's glorious celebration of Christ the King brought the Church's year to its conclusion: a new Church year begins this coming Sunday, the First of Advent. Advent is the great season of preparation – not simply in terms of the practical arrangements we need to make for Christmas, but as a time in which to take stock, to reflect and to recommit ourselves to our vocation as friends and followers of Jesus. You can be assured of a warm welcome at Mass this Sunday – not least because I think I now finally understand how to work our new thermostat!

However, you'll find yourself cold and alone if you try to come to St Mary's on Saturday evening! There is no Vigil Mass this weekend, to allow us to join our friends at St Andrew, Kingsbury for their Patronal celebrations at 4.30pm. The folk at St Andrew's are so good about supporting the Kenton calendar, so please do return the favour by heading to Kingsbury this Saturday for Mass, and a party afterwards.

Thank you for your support for last month's Macmillan Coffee Morning, which raised an amazing £700! Thank you likewise to those whose hard work and creativity in the kitchen made this event such a success.

Your help is once again needed, as we enter Advent: first, to deliver Christmas invitations to the households in our parish. There will be a box of cards at the back of church this Sunday, plus a list of roads to which to deliver. If you can spare just half an hour between now and Christmas, together we can share the Good News of the Birth of the Saviour far and wide. Next, your donations are invited towards our Christmas Flowers – again, there'll be a basket at the back after Mass. With hopefully a healthy number of visitors this Christmas, of course we want St Mary's looking its best. Finally, attached to this mailing is a copy of the congregational Skills Audit with which we'll be engaging on the Second Sunday of Advent, 4 December. Do please read through and begin to think about the questions – and, if you know you cannot be present on Sunday, 4 December, please feel free to print and complete the questionnaire, and return it to me at your convenience.

Please likewise find attached to this e-mail a full list of our Christmas services, plus an invitation to a Carol Service at St Mary, Willesden (on 10 December), in support of the Brent FoodBank.
